Why Smart Business Owners Should Pay Attention to Google Investing in Claude AI

Even tech giants like to keep their friends close and their enemies closer. Last week, Google committed $40 billion to Anthropic, the owners and creators of Claude AI, a.k.a Google's competitor. Google, through its parent company Alphabet, gave the first $10 billion in cash and will release the remaining 30 billion dollars based on Anthropic’s performance. Essentially Google paid to have a seat at the enemies table.

This story offers so much speculation within the tech world as to why Google would do such a thing. What’s interesting to me is that Google already has its own AI product, Gemini, and it’s speculated that Google and its parent company have spent around $175 billion on AI research and development to develop and push Gemini out to Google customers.

So is this just a simple case of: if Google can’t win the AI race to become the first company to reach a trillion-dollar valuation, they might as well invest in the company that looks like it could get there first…… Anthropic? Seems like Google opted for the protection plan to ensure no matter what happens, they make money.

What I find fascinating as a marketing agency owner  and someone who is fascinated by tech culture is how these companies create insular ecosystems around themselves. They’ll invest in what the outside world would view as “enemy territory” because they understand the value of betting on the long shot… while simultaneously putting money on every horse in the race, and saying attaboy to whoever crosses the finish line first.

If you’re a regular business person reading this article, you’re probably thinking, “Why do I care what a bunch of billionaires in Silicon Valley (or South Florida) are doing?”

So for my clients, we’re standing in the wings patiently watching to see how effective Google Ads will be long term. With 37% of the U.S. now turning to OpenAI tools for search, and additional data showing that somewhere between 23% and 26% of users stop their search entirely after reading the AI-generated response on Google, that’s a massive shift in user behavior

For years, it’s essentially been an automatic slot machine for Google… someone searches for something, Google shows a paid result, and Google gets paid. The second a company stops feeding money into the machine, they slowly get pushed further and further into oblivion.

But now AI is changing user behavior in real time. People are getting answers faster, clicking less, and in many cases not even making it far enough down the page to see the ads at all..

Unfortunately, I don’t think enough business owners are paying attention to what that could mean for the future of digital advertising.

I still love Google Ads, and I don’t think it’s time to hit the panic button today. But it is absolutely something I would heavily vet and pay attention to before investing thousands of dollars promoting my business long term.
